2027: Jonathan’s return could undermine Tinubu’s re-election bid – PDP chieftain Umar Sani

A prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has said that a potential return to the presidential race by former President Goodluck Jonathan would significantly impact President Bola Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in 2027.
Speaking on The Morning Show, a programme on Arise Television on Friday, Sani argued that Jonathan’s entry would drastically shift political dynamics, particularly in the South-South region, which he said Tinubu is currently working to consolidate.
“Tinubu is actively positioning himself in states like Edo, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers. But the return of Jonathan would upstage those efforts, as the South-South would rally firmly behind their own,” Sani stated.
He emphasized that the region’s loyalty to Jonathan remains strong. “They simply will not sacrifice their own son for any other political consideration. His presence in the race would energize voters across the South-South, and that would deal a significant blow to Tinubu’s prospects.”
Sani further suggested that while Jonathan’s candidacy would also have implications for other contenders, it would pose the greatest challenge to Tinubu. “It will affect Tinubu more than it would affect any northern candidate, since the North would become the battleground for Jonathan.”
Speculation about a possible political comeback by Goodluck Jonathan continues to circulate, although the former president has yet to officially declare his intentions for 2027.
