Kwara State University students decry rising cases of rape and robbery

Students of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, have raised alarm over the rising incidents of rape, armed robberies, and extortion within and around the university community.

In a passionate plea circulated widely across social media platforms, students expressed deep concern about their safety, stating that they now live in fear every day.

“We are not safe. Robbery and rape occur every day within the student community at KWASU, and we are tired,” one student lamented.

Students alleged that criminal attacks have become routine, especially in off‑campus private hostels. According to them, many have fallen victim to rape, armed robbery, and assault, often with little or no protection from security personnel.

The students have called on both the state government and the university authorities to take urgent measures to protect their lives and restore order.

In response, KWASU announced that a joint security patrol team — comprised of the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local vigilantes — has been deployed to intensify surveillance and protect students.

In a statement signed by the Registrar, Dr. Kikelomo Sallee, the university assured students and staff of its commitment to ensuring their safety.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement issued by the Acting Director of University Relations, Dr. Saeedat Aliyu, the institution announced new restrictions within the school’s host community.

Effective immediately, all motorcycles are banned from operating after 10 p.m., while all commercial activities must end by 11 p.m. Additionally, all generator sets must be turned off by midnight, and no night parties will be allowed within the community until further notice.

Dr. Aliyu stated that the measures were adopted following a stakeholders’ meeting on Monday, which was attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh‑Luqman Alade Jimoh, members of the university management team, the Moro LGA chairperson, traditional rulers, and security agencies.
