Tinubu’s aide warns Jonathan: ‘those urging you to run in 2027 once forced you out’

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan against yielding to calls for a presidential comeback in 2027, warning that the same political forces urging him to return once contributed to his ouster.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on Wednesday, Bwala also dismissed the chances of former Anambra State governor Peter Obi securing a presidential ticket for the 2027 election, whether under the Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“There’s not a single politician today with the capacity to defeat President Bola Tinubu on all fronts,” Bwala asserted. “Peter Obi will not clinch the presidential ticket of any of those parties — LP, ADC, or PDP. At best, he might be considered for a running mate position.”

Bwala noted that political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections are already taking shape, with key opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Senate President David Mark reportedly strategizing to challenge the APC.

He also addressed the growing speculation around former President Jonathan’s potential return to the race, even though Jonathan has yet to formally declare any interest.

“Some unscrupulous elements are trying to hoodwink former President Goodluck Jonathan into returning to politics so they can tarnish the international reputation he has built since leaving office,” Bwala said.

He further questioned the motives of those encouraging Jonathan’s return, particularly from the North. “The same people urging him to run now are those who worked to remove him in 2015. What assurance does he have that they genuinely support him this time?”

While Jonathan remains highly respected on the global stage for his post-presidency diplomacy and democratic credentials, Bwala insisted that Tinubu’s political influence — which he said spans both northern and southern Nigeria — gives the incumbent president a significant edge heading into 2027
