Governor Abdulrazaq showcases Kwara’s investment in creative economy as Nollywood stars gather in Ilorin

Kwara State played host to some of Nollywood’s biggest stars on Sunday night as Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq highlighted the state’s investment in the creative economy. The occasion was the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, held at the Sugar Factory Film Studio in Ilorin, where notable figures in the movie industry were celebrated for their outstanding contributions.

The event recognized legendary actors such as Fred Amata, Hilda Dokubo, Tunji Bamishigbin, Gloria Anozie, Ayo Magaji, Bimbo Manuel, Keppy Bassey Ekpeyoung, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Toyin Abraham, Lillian Aluko, and Aisha Lawa. Kanayo O. Kanayo received a lifetime achievement award, presented by Governor Abdulrazaq. Other winners included Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, Mercy Aigbe, and Adebayo Tijani, who earned accolades in various categories.

Femi Adebayo stood out with four awards, including Best Actor of the Year, for his captivating role in the hit film Jagun Jagun. Wumi Toriola was named Best Actress for her performance in The Unknown Soldier, a film that has garnered significant acclaim. Both winners received wardrobe prizes worth N5 million each, sponsored by Ilorin-based firm Wura Fadaka.

Governor Abdulrazaq used the platform to position Kwara State as a hub for creative endeavors, highlighting the potential of its facilities and serene environment for film production, tourism, and innovation.

“Tonight’s event is taking place at the Sugar Factory Film Studio, a purpose-built facility aimed at elevating cinematography, developing local talent, and establishing Kwara as a leading destination for high-quality film production,” the governor said.

He emphasized the administration’s commitment to the creative sector, noting that the Sugar Factory Film Studio offers state-of-the-art resources to enhance movie production, build local capacity, and boost the state’s economy. Other key projects supporting the creative ecosystem include the Visual Arts Centre, the Ilorin Innovation Hub, the remodeled Kwara Hotel, and natural attractions such as Owu Falls, Sobi Hill, and the Flower Garden.

“Our accessible road network, proximity to an international airport, and excellent sports facilities make Kwara an ideal destination for creative and leisure activities. We invite you to consider Kwara for your next productions, holidays, and artistic pursuits,” Governor Abdulrazaq added.

The event was attended by dignitaries such as the governor’s wife, Olufolake Abdulrazaq, House of Representatives member Mukhtar Shagaya, state legislators, cabinet members, security chiefs, and Abisoye Fagade of the National Institute of Tourism and Hospitality.

Prominent industry figures, including Patrick Doyle and BON Awards founder Seun Oloketuyi, expressed their appreciation to the governor for elevating Kwara’s profile in the creative industry.

The evening underscored Kwara’s growing reputation as a vibrant hub for arts, entertainment, and tourism, solidifying its place as a major player in Nigeria’s creative economy.
