Kwara Government partners with CSO to end child marriage

The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting young girls from early marriage by partnering with the National Coalition of Civil Society to End Child Marriage in Nigeria.
Speaking in Ilorin, the state capital, Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi assured the coalition of the government’s dedication to safeguarding the rights and future of the girl-child. He stressed the negative impact of child marriage on young girls, highlighting its effects on their mental well-being and future aspirations.
“Marriage requires compromise and commitment. Those below 18 are not ready for such responsibilities. Early marriage robs young girls of their dreams, and we must protect them,” Alabi stated.
He also underscored the need for strict implementation of laws to curb the practice, adding that the government, through the Ministry of Social Development, would continue to enforce measures that ensure the protection of girls.
Earlier, the national co-chair of the coalition, Mr. Kolawole Olatosimi, commended the Kwara State Government for its proactive efforts in enforcing policies that protect the girl-child. He described Kwara as one of the leading states championing such initiatives and urged the government to strengthen legal protections for those at risk.
Olatosimi also called for increased budgetary allocation to fund programs that support girls’ education and skills development. He reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to collaborating with the government to enhance the lives of women and girls.
As part of the visit, he presented a policy report and analysis on girl-child protection for the state government’s consideration.
