The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, has unequivocally dismissed rumors linking the owner of Item7, a popular local business, to the recent homicide in Oke Oyi. Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday at the Police headquarters in Ilorin, Olaiya clarified that the claims, propagated by Abdulwakeel Olajuwon via his social media platform Weaky TV, are baseless and unconnected to the ongoing investigation.
Olaiya stated, “The suggestion that the owner of Item7 is involved in the homicide case is entirely false. Such unfounded accusations not only damage the reputation of a reputable businessperson but also risk affecting the livelihoods of employees and eroding public trust in the business.”
He emphasized the damaging effects of spreading false information, noting that misinformation can cause financial losses, job insecurity, and unnecessary harm to innocent individuals. Highlighting the legal implications, Olaiya cited Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015, which criminalizes the deliberate dissemination of false information meant to mislead or incite the public.
Abdulwakeel Olajuwon, 36, the individual responsible for circulating the unverified claims, has been apprehended and will face charges in court. The Police Commissioner warned against the spread of unverified rumors, especially in sensitive cases, underscoring that such actions disrupt investigations, harm public peace, and carry severe legal penalties.
He assured the public that law enforcement is fully committed to resolving the homicide case and bringing those responsible to justice. “Every resource is being deployed to ensure a thorough investigation, and we will continue until justice is served,” Olaiya affirmed.
The Commissioner also urged the community to rely on verified updates from official law enforcement channels and to refrain from sharing unverified or misleading information. He concluded by thanking the public for their cooperation and vigilance.
This incident serves as a reminder of the grave consequences of spreading false information, both legally and socially, and highlights the importance of responsible communication in preserving public trust and order.
