Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, has ordered the immediate arrest of officers accused of extorting ₦200,000 from a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Taiwo Kayode Taye.

The CP, visibly displeased by the incident, described the actions of the officers as unacceptable and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to ensure justice is served.

According to reports, officers from the state police command’s Anti-Cultism Unit allegedly stopped Taiwo in Erin-Ile, a town in Kwara, while he was traveling in a commercial vehicle to Osogbo, Osun State. The officers reportedly demanded access to his mobile phone, and upon his refusal, took him to the Ijagbo Police Division.

Even after being moved to Ijagbo, Taiwo continued to decline unlocking his phone. He was then transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Ilorin, where he was allegedly coerced into unlocking his phone and forced to transfer ₦200,000 to a bank account bearing the name Lucy Akor.

Confirming the incident during a telephone interview with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, CP Ojo expressed outrage over the conduct of the involved officers and emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated under his watch.

“I am deeply disappointed by the actions of the officers involved in this shameful act,” he said. “I have ordered their immediate arrest, and a discreet investigation is underway. Anyone found guilty will face appropriate disciplinary measures.”

The police commissioner also reiterated his commitment to restoring public trust and upholding professional standards within the force.
